More Information (Ashdown Radio is not responsible for external websites)

Graeme Lyons is a Sussex-based freelance entomologist, ecologist and botanist with 30 years’ experience studying and surveying a range of species. Graeme is the county recorder for spiders and bugs and spends most of his spare time out in the field finding these fascinating but often overlooked species – Graeme submitted 55,111 records of 4,505 species in 2023.

Find out more about Graeme and his work by reading his blog: The Lyons Share (analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.com)

Plan for the day:

9:50am -10am: Meet at the Ashdown Forest Centre Education Barn (look for signs for the workshop)

10am – The workshop begins with an introduction and presentation by Graeme, followed by an early lunch (bring your own packed lunch, there will be tea and coffee available).

12pm: Drive to meeting point on Ashdown Forest (car share where possible), to spend the afternoon identifying spiders and other insects you may come across.

4pm: Event finishes.

Please read the following event information:

Spiders do not like to come out in very wet or windy conditions. In the event of bad weather we will rearrange to Friday 20th September. Please check your emails before travelling to the event - all participants will be contacted by email by 8am on the day of the event if we need to cancel.

No dogs – this workshop is not suitable for our canine friends.

Minimum age of participants – our advice is that this event is not suitable for children under 10 years of age. The course material is aimed at adults, and the afternoon’s walk will be strenuous. Please contact us for more information if required. Children over 10 years of age are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

As with any walk across Ashdown Forest the paths will be uneven in places and there will be hills. Sturdy boots or wellies are a must. Please note we are also likely to walk through areas where ticks may be present so long trousers should be worn. Please make sure you bring plenty of water, snacks and dress appropriately for the weather.

Unfortunately, the afternoon session of this workshop is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Please note that identification apps are banned on all of Graeme’s courses!

Car parking charges are included as part of the ticket price for this event.
