East Sussex fish & chip shop is one of the best in the country

Churchills Fish and Chips, in Langney Shopping Centre, was recognised at the 2026 Fry Awards.

Luke O'Rourke, the manager of Churchill’s Fish and Chips in Langney Shopping Centre, Eastbourne, expressed his thrill after the business was named one of the UK's Top 50 Fish & Chip Takeaways for 2026. 

The 2026 recognition, awarded by Fry Magazine, marks the fourth consecutive year the shop has received this national accolade. Churchill's Eastbourne was notably the only chippy in the Sussex region to be included on the 2026 list. 

Key Details of the Recognition:

• Award Criteria: Shops were secretly assessed by mystery diners on food quality, premises cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, and social media presence.
• Performance: To qualify, takeaways required a pass mark of 97%.
• Manager's Response: O'Rourke attributed the success to a "hardworking, passionate team" and loyal customer support, stating the award is a testament to the "quality, care, and great food" they serve.
• Background: The shop is part of a family-run chain founded in the 1920s, now owned by fourth-generation operator James Lipscombe.
