Eastbourne MP Launches Campaign to Protect the Town's Iconic Pier

Following growing concern about the future of Eastbourne Pier, Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde has today (15 June) launched a petition calling for action to safeguard the town's iconic landmark.

Eastbourne Pier has stood proudly on the town's seafront for more than 150 years. However, its future has been thrown into doubt following the reported liquidation of a company linked to its ownership.

Eastbourne Pier, like many historic pleasure piers across the country, faces significant challenges, not least the substantial costs associated with maintaining these iconic structures.

Mr Babarinde is calling on the Government to work with the local communities, relevant stakeholders and heritage organisations to explore what support can be made available to help safeguard historic pleasure piers, like Eastbourne Pier.

Mr Babarinde said:

"Eastbourne Pier is the beating heart of our seaside town. It plays a vital role in our local economy and is central to our town's identity and heritage.

I am determined to explore every possible option to help safeguard Eastbourne Pier for future generations.

That is why I have launched this petition calling on the Government to work with local communities like ours and with heritage organisations to identify what support can be provided to protect this much-loved landmark and others like it across the country”.
