Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde recently visited Christ Church to attend one of their evening bell-ringing practices and show support for the group’s campaign to restore the church’s eight bells.
The bells, some of which are almost 150 years old, are now in need of full restoration to ensure they can continue ringing for generations to come. The group has launched a fundraising campaign to support this much-needed work.
Local residents are being encouraged to donate; contributions can be made via bank transfer, and sponsors will have their names added to an oak display board in the church.
During the visit, Mr Babarinde had the opportunity to try his hand at bell ringing and was introduced to the different patterns, known as methods, that ringers use to create intricate sequences. The experience highlighted the remarkable skill, concentration, and teamwork required in the tradition of change ringing.
The group is also keen to welcome new members as part of a national ambition to recruit 10,000 new bell ringers by 2030. Anyone interested in giving it a try is encouraged to attend their weekly practice, held every Tuesday evening from 7.30 pm.
In a statement following his visit, Mr Babarinde said:
“It was a pleasure to visit the bell ringers at Christ Church and learn more about the fascinating art of change ringing.
I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest to give it a try and support their campaign for the full restoration of the bells.
A massive thank you to Tom, Maddy, Marion, and the whole team for their warm welcome and for sharing their passion for this wonderful tradition.”
A representative from the group said:
“It was a great experience to welcome Josh to our bell-ringing practice at Christ Church, Seaside, to raise awareness of new learners and funds for restoring and repairing our 140-year-old bells. He was a natural!”
