Eastbourne named 2nd worst in UK for noisy neighbours

Eastbourne has been ranked as the second-worst area in the UK for noise complaints from neighbours

A recent national study revealed that the Sussex coastal town was beaten only by Worcester for noise-related friction. 

Key Findings from the Study

• The Coastal Factor: Acoustic experts suggest that top-ranking coastal destinations like Eastbourne and Blackpool face unique challenges due to a high concentration of holiday accommodations. The friction frequently occurs when transient visitors disrupt permanent, full-time residents. 
• A Regional Problem: This data mirrors wider trends across the county. A broader county-level analysis named East Sussex the absolute noisiest county in the UK, averaging 7.7 noise complaints per 1,000 residents. Nearby West Sussex tied for second place at 7.0 complaints per 1,000 people. 
• Mystery Disturbances: Local frustrations have been further fueled by a series of unexplained late-night loud bangs reported across Eastbourne, stretching from the town centre to the harbour. Sussex Police recently stated that these disruptive noises are highly likely to be fireworks being set off from moving vehicles.

What the Law Says

The study also highlighted a sharp rise in Google searches regarding the "11pm noise rule". While the UK does not impose a blanket ban on late-night noise, local authorities hold legal powers to investigate excessive domestic noise operating between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. Councils can issue warnings, hand out fines, or legally seize audio equipment from persistent offenders.
