The future of the iconic Eastbourne Pier has been thrown into serious doubt after its operating company, Lions Pier Limited, was forced into compulsory liquidation.
The future of the iconic Eastbourne Pier has been thrown into serious doubt after its operating company, Lions Pier Limited, was forced into compulsory liquidation.
The Liquidation and Court Order
- Compulsory Winding-Up: The High Court issued a compulsory winding-up order against Lions Pier Limited on 12 May 2026.
- Official Receiver: The management and financial control of Eastbourne Pier have now been handed over to the government's Official Receiver.
- Sole Director: Local hotelier Sheikh Abid Gulzar—often referred to as "Mr Goldfinger"—is listed as the sole director of the liquidated company.
Wider Legal and Financial Troubles
The liquidation follows a wave of legal and financial issues surrounding Gulzar’s business operations in Sussex:
- Fraud Trial: Gulzar is scheduled to face a three-week jury trial at Lewes Crown Court in November 2026. He and a co-defendant face ten counts of fraud involving approximately £150,000 in unpaid water bills.
- Hastings Pier Frozen: Gulzar's other prominent landmark, Hastings Pier, was officially declared a frozen asset by the UK Land Registry. A court order prevents him from selling it without consent due to private prosecutions.
- History of Insolvency: Gulzar previously ran the operating company for Hastings Pier into liquidation, leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds in unpaid debts to suppliers and local creditors.
What This Means for Eastbourne Pier
While the freehold of the pier remains tied to Gulzar's asset network, the liquidation of the operating company creates immense uncertainty regarding its day-to-day viability, safety maintenance, and structural upkeep. Local communities and politicians are raising concerns that the Grade II* listed Victorian landmark will face prolonged neglect while tangled in the Official Receiver's hands and upcoming criminal court proceedings.
