Family’s tribute after tragic death of man in A27 collision

A family have described the “warmth, energy and kindness” of a man who tragically died in a collision on the A27.

Edward ‘Bunty’ Pearce, aged 20 from Heathfield, was travelling to work when he was fatally injured in the collision on July 13 near Pevensey.

In a statement his family said: “Edward was a much-loved son, family member, and friend. He lived life with boundless energy.

“His days were always filled with purpose, laughter, and adventure. He brought warmth, energy, and kindness to everyone around him, and had a remarkable ability to make people feel at ease.

“While this loss is unimaginable for us, we take comfort in the love Edward shared throughout his life and the lasting impact he had on so many people.

“Those who knew Edward were touched by his generous spirit, and it was impossible not to be drawn to his infectious smile and caring nature.”

They said Edward was training as a plumber and had the ambition to go to work in Australia. He was the brother of William, who sadly died 14 years ago from leukaemia.

They added: “During William’s illness, Edward selflessly became a bone marrow donor at the age of four for his big brother. It was a gift that reflected the depth of his love and compassion.

“In keeping with his generous character, Edward became an organ donor. Through this selfless gift, he was able to donate six organs, helping to save the lives of seven people who were in urgent need of transplants.

“Even in passing, Edward’s kindness and compassion have given others the precious gift of life, creating a legacy that will endure for generations.

“Edward will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched, the happiness he brought to others, and the extraordinary gifts he gave to those he never met.”

The family has said details of Edward’s funeral will be announced in due course.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision on the A27, which involved a white Mercedes Sprinter van, and a white VW Caddy van, at about 6.30am on 13 July on the westbound carriageway approaching Golden Jubilee Way.

In particular they are appealing for any motorists who passed the VW Caddy van which had broken down in the westbound carriageway to come forward, as well as anyone with dashcam footage in the area at the time.

The driver of the Mercedes Sprinter, a 31-year-old man from Bexhill, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and drug driving. He has been bailed, pending further enquiries.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to report it to Sussex Police, quoting Operation Wickham.
