Biannual coastal protection and shingle works have commenced at Seaford, Shoreham, and Southwick beaches to reinforce vital sea defences ahead of the winter season.

The operations are split across two separate coastal management schemes:

🚧 Southwick & Shoreham Beach Replenishment

Managed by the Shoreham Port Authority, this project helps protect the coastline from erosion and storm damage.

  • The Operation: Contractors are transporting shingle from the easternmost end of Shoreham Beach by road to the Eastern Breakwater at Southwick Beach.
  • Duration: The work is expected to take around three weeks.
  • Public Impact: Access along the Southwick Beach revetment is closed for safety. Residents can expect a noticeable increase in vehicle traffic along Basin Road South.

🚜 Seaford Beach Profiling

Managed by the Environment Agency, this soft-engineering flood defence scheme safeguards 459 local homes and businesses in Seaford and East Newhaven.

  • The Operation: Bulldozers have begun profiling and stockpiling shingle on the frontage between Splash Point Terminal Groyne and the Martello Tower.
  • The Purpose: This initial profiling manages shingle distribution to minimise loss from longshore drift. It serves as preparation for Phase 1 of the main shingle recycling programme, which is slated to start in early November.
  • Public Impact: Heavy machinery is actively operating on the beach. Work areas are clearly marked, and beach users are advised to maintain a safe distance from the equipment.
