We have taken shops, and shopping for granted - using local shops or the supermarket, as well as shopping on-line and getting items delivered to our front door. How different was it for our ancestors? Would we recognise a medieval shopfront on our High Street? How have shop signs and names changed? Some of us remember bacon slicing machines, cash railways and no self-service, but many don't! Why did Napoleon call us 'a nation of shopkeepers', and is this still a relevant description?

Please book in advance if possible, via the Uckfield Hwebsite, or by visiting Bridge Cottage.
