British Transport Police appeal: Lewes Train Derailment

British Transport Police (BTP) are urgently appealing for any remaining passengers from the Lewes train derailment on Thursday, 13 August 2026, to come forward by calling 0800 40 50 40 or texting 61016 (quoting reference 521 of 13 August).

Detectives are trying to reach those who evacuated the scene and immediately took alternative routes home before speaking with officers.

BTP Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith highly praised the "remarkable community spirit" of local Lewes residents. 

• Support Provided: Residents rushed to the site to assist emergency responders and provide food, water, and vital support to shaken passengers. 
• Lamport/Landport Community Hub: The local community centre opened immediately as a designated place of safety, providing medical treatment and critical shelter for passengers during the intense heatwave. 

Accident and Injury Status

• The Incident: Three carriages of the Eastbourne-bound train overturned and tumbled off the tracks at approximately 15:44 BST. 
• Total Passengers: Around 150 people were on board the train at the time of the crash. 
• Casualties: Two passengers remain hospitalised with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another 18 people were treated at the hospital for minor injuries and have since been discharged. 
• Investigation: The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is currently investigating the tracks and infrastructure. Officials from Network Rail noted that severe, hot weather conditions had presented exceptional challenges to the line, though the exact cause remains under official review.
