Hailsham main road to remain closed for further five weeks as works move to second phase

A295 South Road in Hailsham is facing a full five-week closure from Diplocks Way to Ersham Roundabout, which commenced on Friday, 21 August 2026, as major utility works transition into their next phase

Key Road Closures & Timelines

Gas network operator SGN is conducting an urgent project to replace a century-old metal gas main with durable plastic pipes. The overall scheme is slated to last until 31 October 2026, causing the following phased disruptions: 

• South Road (A295): Closed completely from Diplocks Way to Ersham Roundabout for 5 weeks starting 21 August.
• Diplocks Way: Closed entirely for 3 weeks from 21 August. It will subsequently reopen for southbound traffic only.
• Gordon Road: Shut at its junction with South Road for roughly 4 weeks starting late August.
• Ersham Road: Temporary traffic lights will be deployed from Friday, 11 September. A later phase will close the road from South Road to Windsor Close for 3 weeks, with outstanding work delayed until 2027.
• Night Works: SGN confirmed that overnight work will not take place due to crew safety and limited visibility. 

Local Business & Transit Impact

• Business Access: All local shops and yards on Diplocks Way and South Road remain open. Vehicles can access them via the Diplocks Roundabout. 
• Brighton & Hove Buses (28 / 500): Diverted away from Gordon Road, Ropemaker Park, and Ingrams Way. Passengers should use Hailsham Police Station (for Eastbourne) or Hailsham Tesco (for Brighton). 
• Stagecoach Buses (51 / 52 / 53): Services 51 and 53 are diverting via the A22 Hailsham Bypass, Diplocks Roundabout, and Diplocks Way. Service 52 is diverting via Ersham Road and Stone Cross.
