Local residents are invited to a free Discovery Weekend at Landport Bottom Nature Reserve on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March, offering a chance to explore the wildlife, history and future of one of Lewes’s most popular green spaces.
Running from 10am to 4pm each day, the event will bring together guided walks, creative activities, wildlife displays and informal talks celebrating the landscapes and species that make Landport Bottom special.
Visitors can drop in throughout the day to take part in hands-on activities, learn about the wildlife of the downland and meet the people who help care for the site. The event is being organised by Lewes Town Council and Lewes Railway Land Wildlife Trust, and will also give local people the opportunity to learn more about the draft 10-year management plan for Landport Bottom and share their views on how this much-loved landscape should be managed in the years ahead.
Perched on the northern edge of Lewes and forming part of the South Downs, Landport Bottom Nature Reserve is a popular place for walking, dog walking and enjoying wide views across the town and surrounding countryside.
Beneath its open grassland lies one of Europe’s rarest habitats — chalk grassland — supporting a rich diversity of wildflowers, butterflies, birds and reptiles. The site is also steeped in history, with Bronze Age burial mounds and land connected to the Battle of Lewes in 1264. Alongside celebrating the landscape, the Discovery Weekend highlights the important role local people play in caring for it.
Volunteers help with practical conservation work, wildlife monitoring and community activities throughout the year, and visitors will be able to find out how they can get involved. The event is free and open to everyone, whether you are a regular visitor to the reserve or discovering it for the first time.
