Hailsham Town Council is reminding residents to save the dates for two exciting summer community events: Prom in the Park on Sunday 7th June and the Sussex Day Celebration on Saturday 20th June
Prom in the Park on Sunday 7th June and the Sussex Day Celebration on Saturday 20th June. Both events promise fun, entertainment and activities for all ages, showcasing local talent, family-friendly attractions and opportunities to support community initiatives. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and join in the festivities that celebrate the heart and spirit of Hailsham.
Prom in the Park – Sunday 7th June, 3pm to 6pm
Kicking off the summer festivities, Prom in the Park will take place at Western Road Recreation Ground. Residents are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs to enjoy an afternoon of live music and family entertainment in a relaxed outdoor setting. For those preferring refreshments on site, Ye Olde Spud Shoppe will provide jacket potatoes and drinks.
The event will feature a live performance from the Warbleton Brass Band, performing a mix of classic and contemporary pieces to delight audiences of all ages. Children will also be entertained with close-up magic, balloon modelling and a traditional Punch and Judy show from Jonathan Cann. Local radio station Hailsham FM will be on hand to provide live coverage throughout the afternoon.
A charity collection at the end of the event will support St Wilfrid’s Hospice, helping to raise funds for this vital local service.
Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, Chair of the Communities Committee, said: “Prom in the Park is a fantastic new addition to our summer events programme. It offers residents of all ages the chance to enjoy live music, family entertainment, and the opportunity to support St Wilfrid’s Hospice. We hope it will become a cherished summer tradition for Hailsham.”
Town Councillor Mary Laxton added: “This event reflects our commitment to delivering inclusive, engaging and community-focused activities. It’s about families enjoying the outdoors, celebrating togetherness and creating memories while supporting a very worthwhile cause.”
Sussex Day Celebration – Saturday 20th June, 9am to 3pm
Hailsham Town Council will continue the summer celebrations with a free Sussex Day event in Vicarage Field and Hailsham High Street, celebrating the county’s heritage and Hailsham’s vibrant community.
Visitors can enjoy a beer tent, bustling market with locally sourced food and artisan products, and a full programme of live entertainment. Highlights include traditional maypole dancing by local Brownies, performances by Hailsham Choral Society (including ‘Sussex by the Sea’), the Sussex Stompers and Long Man Morris Dancers.
Families will be entertained with activities such as close-up magic, balloon modelling and a Punch and Judy show, again courtesy of Jonathan Cann. Hailsham FM will provide live coverage of the day.
A road closure for Hailsham High Street will be in place from 7am to 5pm to ensure the safety of participants and visitors.
Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts commented: “Our Sussex Day extravaganza is a free community event celebrating the best of Hailsham and Sussex. With live music, delicious food, craft stalls, and local talent, it’s a day for everyone to enjoy and to take pride in our shared heritage.”
“It’s about supporting local performers and businesses, bringing people together and celebrating the strong sense of community spirit that Hailsham is known for.”
Sussex Day coincides with St Richard’s Day on 16th June, honouring Sussex’s patron saint and marking the anniversary of the translation of his remains at Chichester Cathedral in 1276.
