SASBAH take people on a weekend break

SIXTY-FOUR members of a Sussex charity creating opportunities for those with disabilities to thrive enjoyed a weekend break - with a difference.

Each year, Sasbah - based in Eastbourne - takes a large group away to Lodge Hill, an outdoor activities centre in Pulborough, West Sussex.

But this is no normal holiday - activities included orienteering, rifle shooting, go-karting, zip wire, axe throwing, accessible trikes, Shelter building, archery, snowtubing, and tunnelling.

There was also a magician, disco, karaoke, Taylor Swift Tribute, plus visiting animals including snakes.

The project is called ‘Breakaway’ and is a residential respite holiday run annually and initiated by Eastbourne AM Rotary Club in partnership with Sasbah.

Rom Sanglaji, CEO of Sasbah, said: "Breakaway is about our people coming away for three days and taking part in activities that, for some, push boundaries.

"It is a packed weekend, and seeing our disabled people taking part in the challenging activities really is a sight to behold.

"Everyone had such an amazing time from start to finish. It was a packed programme, but we do that deliberately to enhance the experience for them."

James Hookway, president of Eastbourne AM Rotary Club, says it's an expensive weekend to put on but it is achieved through fundraising in partnership with Sasbah, which champions disability and works with more than 1,000 people with disabilities across Sussex.

Rom said: "It may be expensive but it's worth every penny. The feedback we received has been heartwarming.

"We are a small charity and it's a major achievement for our staff and volunteers to organise such a fantastic weekend."

"Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way. The weekend provided valuable respite for many of our families. It also provided huge entertainment for our members of the Sasbah family."
