- Increased Fire Risk: Prolonged hot and dry weather triggered a Government Emergency and Severe Alert regarding wildfire risks. Organisers noted that recent incidents proved residential and commercial properties were also vulnerable.
- Insurance Restrictions: Because the government alert remains active, the society's insurers explicitly confirmed they would not provide insurance coverage for the use of open-flame torches in the procession.
- Safety Consensus: The decision was finalised during a committee meeting on 1 September 2026 following multi-agency advice from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the local authority's Safety Advisory Group, and emergency services.
What is Still Going Ahead?
The society has stressed that the carnival is not cancelled. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and support the event's 199th year through the remaining scheduled activities:
- Daytime & Evening Processions: The costume, fancy dress, and visiting society processions will proceed as normal (Children's procession at 1:30pm; Grand Procession at 7:30pm).
- Alternative Lighting: Spectators and walking groups are being asked to bring battery-powered lanterns and fairy lights to help light up the town safely.
- Funfair & Collections: Street charity collections and Stevens Funfair on Luxfords Field remain active components of the weekend.
