Hailsham Town Council has approved plans to install a new beacon at Western Road Recreation Ground, marking an important addition to the town’s community facilities.
The structure will feature a tall pole topped with a brazier and will serve as a focal point for civic celebrations and key local events throughout the year.
Councillors agreed that a permanent basket should be installed at the site, enabling Hailsham Bonfire Society to use the beacon as part of its annual Guy Fawkes festivities, as well as during other significant community occasions. The beacon is intended to provide a shared symbol for residents and a gathering point for moments of celebration and commemoration.
Local sports clubs based at Western Road Recreation Ground were consulted during the planning process to ensure the beacon’s placement complements existing activities and facilities.
Funding for the project will come from the Town Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), allocated to support improvements that benefit the wider community.
Councillor Mary Laxton, Chair of the Assets Management Committee said: “It’s taken a considerable amount of time, effort and conversations with third parties to finally get to implement this significant addition to our community. We are one of the last towns in Sussex to have a beacon.”
“We are delighted to see this project moving forward and look forward to seeing the beacon become a focal point for residents during civic occasions and community celebrations for many years to come.”
The Town Council believes the new installation will strengthen Hailsham’s longstanding traditions and enhance its ability to host memorable public events.
Town councillor and Honorary Vice President of Hailsham Bonfire Society, Dave Chapman commented: “The annual bonfire and firework celebrations in Hailsham are always well received, extremely popular and, with no entry fee, offer a traditional bonfire night experience.”
“Agreeing to offer funding for a beacon structure demonstrates the Town Council’s appreciation for Hailsham Bonfire Society and the hard work its members and volunteers put unto creating an exciting schedule of activities each year.”
“The installation of a permanent beacon will help us build on that success and ensure the town can continue to enjoy safe, well-organised and memorable events that bring people of all ages together.”
