One of the UK’s biggest off-road marathon fixtures returns next week with more than 3,000 athletes taking on the challenging South Downs course.
The Beachy Head Marathon weekend, now in its 46th year, returns from 24 – 25 October with marathon, 10k and ultramarathon races taking place on Saturday, and a half marathon on Sunday.
All four races start and finish on Eastbourne Seafront while an incredible course awaits those taking part, including an eye-watering 300 steps, 14 gates, an elevation gain of up to 1,381m and all seven of the world renowned Seven Sisters white cliffs.
The picturesque route is famed for being one of the most scenic and challenging to complete, passing through the South Downs National Park countryside, Friston Forest, four villages, two lighthouses and one river valley.
Runners of all ages and ability will be taking on the challenge, with many raising donations for charity, or reaching personal milestones in their own journey of endurance or physical fitness.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s Lead Member for Tourism & Place, Cllr Jenny Williams said, “We are thrilled to welcome thousands of runners and spectators to our spectacular coastline for this year’s Beachy Head Marathon weekend. Watching these extraordinary runners conquer the legendary hill start and dramatic chalk hills is an incredible sight and is why it has become a renowned fixture in the annual sporting calendar.
“With many participants and their friends and family staying to enjoy the town’s hospitality, the event is sure to provide an important autumnal boost to the tourism economy. Please do come along, cheer on the competitors and enjoy the great race-day atmosphere, and for every runner taking part – we hope you take home unforgettable memories of our beautiful town and coastline.”
The Beachy Head Marathon is supported by a number of volunteers and charities including Mankind, Eastbourne Sea Cadets, Birling Gap Coastguard, Beachy Head Ramblers, Seaford Striders, St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Victoria Baptist Church and Hailsham Rotary Club.
As well as each voluntary organisation receiving a donation from the event – with more than £100,000 issued to date - it is estimated that runners themselves raise a further £100,000 for good causes each year through sponsorship alone.
Races start at 7.40am for the ultramarathon, 8.45am for the marathon, 9.15am for the 10k and at 8am on Sunday for the half marathon.
Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the runners from the start/finish line on Dukes Drive or from Beachy Head and Exceat where there are pubs, cafés, toilets and parking available. Brighton & Hove Buses Coaster Bus also follows much of the route.
Marathon finishers are expected from 11.30am, with the last participants back by 6pm. Road closures will be in operation on Dukes Drive and Upper Dukes Drive.
The Beachy Head Marathon is supported by The View Hotel, Euro Self Drive and Bede’s School. For further information visit www.BeachyHeadMarathon.co.uk.
