Everyone in Crowborough has been saddened by the damage to our War Memorial.
Thankfully, the incident only damaged the end pillar of the structure, and the memorial plaques remain intact. Crowborough Town Council is actively working to ensure the memorial is permanently repaired as quickly as possible.
We have been overwhelmed with the response from our community and are pleased to share that we are hopeful the repairs could be completed just in time for the Remembrance Sunday (8 November) and Armistice Day (11 November) services.
The council is heartened with how Crowborough has come together in response to the incident. Local companies have offered their help with the repair, and the amazing local volunteer group, The Sewing Crow-Bees & Yarn Bombers have jumped into action.
The group has created a ‘Poppy Veil’ made from hundreds of individual poppies which will be joined together to create a respectful cascade over the damaged section.
High Broom Care Home, a certified Veteran Friendly home in Crowborough has asked whether the Council would be willing to accept a small donation towards the restoration and repair of the War Memorial.
The council has suggested that the care home donate to the Sewing Crow-Bees & Yarn Bombers which they were delighted to do. The Sewing Crow-Bees & Yarn Bombers are working on a new remembrance installation for the Memorial Garden at All Saints Church (next to the War Memorial) and are therefore able to re-purpose the poppy cascade that was created last year from the top of the tree into the memorial garden.
They are hoping to have the poppy installations in place by week commencing November, in plenty of time for the remembrance services.
