Wealden Crematorium has earned a Platinum status for its commitment to sustainability, following a rigorous environmental audit.
The crematorium achieved a 94 per cent score from the Greener Globe Funeral Standard, the UK body that assesses environmental and sustainable practices across the funeral sector.
Platinum is the highest status available, and Wealden Crematorium is one of only five in the UK to achieve this recognition.
The comprehensive audit evaluated all areas of the organisation, including its culture, supply chains, energy use, buildings, cremation processes, and grounds. Key factors in securing the top-tier award included the installation of a new hybrid electric-and-gas cremator and 126 rooftop solar panels.
For the local community, this award reflects a dedication to ensuring that Wealden Crematorium remains a place where people can say goodbye to loved ones in peaceful surroundings, while actively protecting and caring for the surrounding environment.
Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health and Asset Management, said, “Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for communities across the country and by progressing from bronze to platinum in just 12 months, the crematorium is demonstrating its determination to make environmental responsibility an integral part of its service. This status is an important milestone, but it is also part of an ongoing journey to show residents that the service provided to them is one of the highest in the country.”
