Following a fire over the weekend between Butts Brow and Eastbourne Downs Golf Club, Eastbourne Borough Council is urging residents and visitors to take extra care when enjoying the South Downs.
While the blaze was brought under control thanks to the swift response of East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, conditions remain extremely dry and the risk of further fires is high.
To support ongoing safety efforts, the council has arranged for a security guard to patrol the area.
Councillor Jim Murray, Cabinet Member for Carbon Neutral 2030 and Water Champion, said:
“The South Downs is one of the UK’s greatest natural assets, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such beautiful countryside on our doorstep. But the fire this weekend shows just how vulnerable the landscape is in hot, dry weather.
“We’re asking everyone to play their part by taking the greatest care when out walking, cycling or picnicking.
“In addition to encouraging everyone to follow the fire prevention advice from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, we are organising security patrols to help ensure visitors to the downland remain safe and avoid inadvertently starting a fire.”
People are advised to dispose of cigarettes safely, not on dry ground and ensure they are fully out, pay attention to signs prohibiting BBQs and campfires, and take their rubbish home – glass can magnify sunlight causing fires.
The council will continue working closely with East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and local partners to monitor conditions and keep the public informed.
