Mims Davies MP comments on Puberty Blockers for Children

Mims Davies MP said:

“Children as young as 11 could again be given puberty blockers under a new trial being considered by the Government.

These strong drugs can have life-changing and long-term consequences, including significant risks to fertility, bone density, and sexual development.

Our youngster’s safety must come first. Before any new trial goes ahead, we do need to fully understand the implications and outcomes for those who have already received this treatment.

As an adult Conservatives strongly believe in your happiness in what every way you believe - that love is love and you should make your choices within the law - that means you can live happily as your true-self. However, under 18s do always need our protection.

We all go through changes as a child and young adult. We need our youngsters to have the time and space they need - before they end up in processes that they simply can’t go back on.

Many people go onto happy and fulfilled lives, and some do choose the trans identity they wish. We need to give our children the time to work out who they are.

Those adults in the trans community need, all our understanding and deserve protections and support. Many of us know and care for people in the trans community who we want to be happy and fulfilled as adults.

Reform didn’t bother to turn up and the Lib Dem’s back this process in the main but didn’t have the honesty to all vote for it and one voted against. Unsurprisingly given who donates to them in terms of pharmaceuticals which was raised in the Chamber….

We Conservatives voted against these proposals. We are united in giving kids their whole childhood to be able to mature and find their way and then take their choices as adults. To be able to consent and fully understand their decisions and themselves.

There is existing data and learnings already out there. Let’s use that.

The full debate is her and was opened for us by Dr Caroline Johnson MP - who herself is an NHS consultant paediatrician, a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and a member of the British Medical Association. She speaks with balance, knowledge, and authority. I was there with her on the front bench for her powerful opening remarks.”
