Contractor appointed to re-open Birling Gap for Bank Holiday

Works will begin in April to save the staircase down to Birling Gap beach which was damaged by the storm earlier this year.

Wealden District Council, which manages the foreshore on behalf of The Crown Estate and is the owner of the staircase, have today announced that works to make the platform and steps safe will commence mid-April and be completed by 2 May 2026, in time for the early Bank Holiday weekend.

The steps have been out of use for two months after cliff falls caused damage to the staircase, which takes visitors from the car park at Birling Gap down to the beach.

The council has now appointed Monson as the consulting principal engineer to oversee the delivery of the project and CJ Thorne & Co, a Wealden based company will be undertaking the structural repair works.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health and Asset Management, said, “After months of assessments of the structure of the steps and its condition we are now able to move forward to complete works to make them safe again for public use. We have appointed CJ Thorne and Co to make sure that the works are carried out to fix the steps making them accessible to residents for the early May Bank Holiday. We want to thank residents for their continued patience.”

Chris Thorne, Managing Director of CJ Thorne and Co, said, “We are delighted to have been appointed as Principal Contractor for this scheme and look forward to continuing to work closely with Wealden District Council and Monson Engineering to restore the steps for the benefit of all.”
