Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde has called on the Government for a crackdown on the use of illegal e-bikes and e-scooters, raising concerns about their impact on local communities during a parliamentary debate this morning (21st October).
Mr Babarinde highlighted concerns in Eastbourne, including around Terminus Road, Kings Drive and the seafront, where an increase in illegal e-bikes and e-scooters has raised questions about public safety.
Recent data showed that Sussex Police recorded a 53.7% rise in reports of illegal e-bike and e-scooter use in the year to June, and seized 321 vehicles between January and July.
The Liberal Democrat MP pointed to examples of good practice from overseas, highlighting the need to learn from other countries about how best to regulate the sector and tackle illegal and dangerous behaviour.
Mr Babarinde concluded by asking the Minister to commit to meeting representatives of Sussex Police to discuss how enforcement could be strengthened in Sussex and Eastbourne.
In a statement following the debate, Mr Babarinde said:
“I'm a proud supporter of active travel and want to see more people walking, wheeling and cycling as part of their everyday journeys.
However, a recent increase in the use of illegal and dangerous e-bikes and e-scooters risks undermining that progress, putting pedestrians at risk and giving responsible users a bad name.
Residents in Eastbourne deserve to feel safe on our streets. That’s why I have made it clear to the Government that we need to ensure these vehicles are properly enforced and give our police the tools they need to take action”.
