Speaking in the House of Commons, Josh Babarinde, Member of Parliament for Eastbourne, urged the Minister (Nesil Caliskan MP) to support his campaign to protect Eastbourne Pier, following concerns being raised about its future.
This came off the back of his recent PMQ and petition, which has amassed thousands of signatures.
Mr Babarinde is now pushing for the Pier to be registered as an Asset of Community Value.
What is an Asset of Community Value?
An Asset of Community Value is a building or piece of land recognised as being of importance to the social, cultural, recreational or economic well-being of a local community.
This designation allows local community groups the opportunity to prepare a bid and raise the funds needed to purchase the asset if it is put up for sale.
The Minister agreed to a meeting with Mr Babarinde and acknowledged the importance of community assets.
In a statement, Mr Babarinde said:
“I am continuing to press the Government and the local council to pull out all the stops to ensure our Pier is properly protected.
“One of the measures I am keen to progress with is registering the Pier as an Asset of Community Value. I have secured a meeting with the Minister to discuss this further and am also in talks with local community groups to explore how they can best support these efforts.
“I will continue to do everything I can to secure the Pier’s future and ensure it continues to serve our community for generations to come.”
