Local student Rosie Birch takes on 100km charity walk for Cancer Research UK

Rosie Birch, a Creative Writing student at the University of Brighton, is taking on a 100-kilometre charity walk from Eastbourne to Arundel to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The Challenge Overview

  • Event: South Coast Ultra Challenge.
  • Dates: Saturday 5 September to Sunday 6 September 2026.
  • Route: From Eastbourne to Arundel via Brighton.
  • Elevation: Roughly 2,100 metres of climbing.
  • Team Name: Fundraising together as "Miles for Smiles". 

Schedule

  1. Saturday, 5 September (8:00 am): Depart Eastbourne, walk to Brighton, and stop overnight.
  2. Sunday, 6 September (7:00 am): Resume the hike from Brighton to the finish line in Arundel. 

The Team & Causes

  • Rosie Birch: Walking for Cancer Research UK because multiple close friends have lost parents to the disease. Her donation link is hosted on JustGiving.
  • Will Lydon: Her friend, a Brighton-born DJ, is walking for the mental health charity Mind. His donation page is also on JustGiving. 

Preparation & Motivation

  • Gear: Rosie previously walked long distances in trainers and only recently bought her first pair of hiking boots.
  • Concerns: Her primary concern is managing blisters, prompting her to stock up on specialized hiking socks.
  • Morale: Will has curated a custom motivational music playlist to keep them moving through the physical strain.
