NHS flu vaccine rollout begins across South East for winter

The NHS winter flu vaccine rollout has officially launched across the South East, initiating its first phase on 1 September 2026.

This initial rollout prioritises children and pregnant women to build immunity and curb the spread of the virus before winter peak periods. 

Phase 1: Eligible Groups From 1 September 2026

• Pregnant women
• Children aged 2 and 3 years old
• All primary and secondary school-aged children
• Children in clinical risk groups aged 6 months to 18 years 

Phase 2: Eligible Groups From 1 October 2026

Other key vulnerable demographics will become eligible for their free NHS flu shot starting in October: 

• Adults aged 65 and over
• Adults with long-term health conditions
• Care home residents
• Carers and close contacts of immunocompromised individuals
• Frontline health and social care workers 

Where to Get Vaccinated

Depending on eligibility, people can receive their vaccine through several pathways across the South East: 

• GP Practices & Community Pharmacies: School-aged children can also attend community clinics if they missed their school session.
• Schools: Primary and secondary schoolchildren will primarily receive the nasal spray vaccine at school.
• Maternity Services: Expectant mothers will be offered the vaccine during scheduled appointments. 

Eligible individuals will be contacted directly via phone or post with booking instructions. Adults in later phases can pre-book appointments via the NHS National Booking Service.
