Police carry out speeding checks on Friday Street in Eastbourne amid dangerous driving concerns

Sussex Police have carried out a targeted speed enforcement operation on Friday Street in Eastbourne following a surge of public concern regarding dangerous and antisocial driving.

During the targeted one-hour deployment, local neighborhood and roads policing officers monitored roughly 100 vehicles, catching a handful of motorists violating basic road safety laws. The operation is part of Operation Downsway, a county-wide campaign explicitly designed to curb dangerous road behavior. 

Key Details & Violations Recorded

The crackdown yielded several immediate traffic offenses from the minority of drivers ignoring road regulations:

• Speeding: A total of three vehicles were recorded breaking the 40mph speed limit on Friday Street. 
• Distracted & Unsafe Driving: Officers identified one motorist using a mobile phone while driving and a van driver not wearing a seatbelt. 
• Secondary Disruption: Two additional drivers slowed down dramatically to look at the active police checkpoint, causing unnecessary localized traffic and congestion. 

Continuing Autumn Crackdown

While police notes emphasize that the vast majority of Eastbourne motorists drive responsibly, enforcement measures under Operation Downsway will continue actively into the autumn months. 

The primary goal remains tackling the "Fatal Five" road offenses—speeding, careless driving, driving under the influence, mobile phone distraction, and failing to wear a seatbelt—which contribute heavily to yearly road casualties across East Sussex.
