Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare is inviting families to enjoy fun-filled, educational Family Learning Days during the May Half Term holidays. Taking place on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May, these popular events offer children and their families a unique opportunity to explore the site while learning more about Raystede’s rescue animals and the charity’s vital work.
Booking is essential, with visitor numbers limited to protect the welfare of Raystede’s nervous rescue animals and to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone.
A hands-on learning experience for the whole family
The theme for the May learning days is “A Year in the Life of Sheldon the Tortoise” with an interactive trail that teaches children how Sheldon’s life changes throughout the seasons, from waking up in spring to preparing for hibernation in winter.
There will also be plenty more to enjoy on the day, including:
- Daily animal talks with Raystede’s knowledgeable team
- Opportunity to learn more about the tortoises and terrapins in Raystede’s care
- Tortoise-themed activities in the Yurt Garden
- Creative craft sessions, where children can make a terrapin to take home
- Relaxing Raystede films, showcasing some of the charity’s animals and their stories.
Gemma Price, Head of Prevention and Education at Raystede, said: “Our Family Learning Days are an opportunity for us to inspire people of all ages to better understand the welfare needs of animals, and it’s a great that we are going to be focusing on tortoises and terrapins in the May Half Term.
“We know that many people do have tortoises as pets and even terrapins too. However, they don’t make easy pets and do have complex needs and often, in the case of terrapins, can lead to them being abandoned or even dumped into lakes and rivers.
“Education events like these are therefore a great way to share information to help pet owners care for the pets they might have at home.”
Families are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
