Golfers support Sussex charity's annual holiday for young adults with disabilities

SIXTY kind golfers have raised more than £3,3000 towards a Sussex charity's annual holiday for young adults with disabilities in September.

The 32rd SASBAH Golf Day - held at Haywards Heath Golf Club - will help to fund the annual Breakaway event at Lodge Hill, near Pulborough in West Sussex.

Each year, the three-day holiday is arranged by SASBAH - The Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus - based in Eastbourne and supporting more than 1000 people across Sussex.

The cost of Breakaway is more than £10,000, and the Golf Day was arranged by SASBAH Chair Tim McDermott-Roe.

He said: "Breakaway is a very significant weekend - SASBAH takes 70 young adults with learning or physical disabilities, carers, staff and volunteers on an activities weekend at Lodge Hill.

"As a keen golfer, I was absolutely thrilled to play my part in making Breakaway happen. I know how important it is, both to those who go and those family members who are able to enjoy some respite from the care they provide on a daily, some hourly, basis.

"You would be amazed at some of the activities they take part in at Lodge Hill  – abseiling, archery, climbing, “we cycle too bikes”, zip lines climbing, shelter building, tunnelling along with loads of indoor games and evening entertainment."

Matt Donaldson won the Golf Day with 36 points, beating Paul McCracken also on 36 on countback, with Daren Aldred third on 35 points.

The team prize was retained by the 2025 winners from BAM of Paul McCraken, Darren Aldred, Theo Turner and Sam Spiller.

Prizes were given at a dinner following the golf with Hannah Sandford presenting the prizes. SASBAH wishes to thank Amicus Wealth for sponsoring the day, Bam for providing golf balls, all of the golfers for participating, as well as the hole and raffle prize sponsors.

Next year's Golf Day has already been booked at the same venue - June 9.

Tim said: "We are always looking for more golfers and sponsors. If you wish to obtain further details of how to sign up to play or how you can be involved in sponsoring a hole etc please contact tim@Sasbah.org.uk"
