Beachy Head Lighthouse Challenge returns to Eastbourne

The annual Beachy Head Lighthouse Challenge is officially returning to the Eastbourne coast on Sunday, 14 June 2026, starting at 4:00 pm.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Eastbourne AM, this popular fundraising event offers a rare opportunity to complete a marshalled walk directly to and around the base of the iconic red-and-white striped Beachy Head Lighthouse. 

Event Overview

The challenge is highly time-sensitive because walking to the structure is only safely possible a few days a year during ultra-low spring tides. 

• The Route: The trek begins at the kiosk near the foot of the South Downs (next to Bede's School). Walkers cross the top of the Downs, head down the steps at Cow Gap, and then navigate rocks, boulders, sand, and slippery seaweed to reach the lighthouse.
• Duration: The round-trip journey spans approximately 4 miles in total and takes an average of 2.5 hours to complete.
• The Reward: Upon successfully finishing the trek, all participants receive a commemorative certificate. 

Entry Fees & Registration

Because of strict tidal windows and safety limits, organisers cap participant numbers and highly recommend booking online in advance.

Charitable Impact

The event originally launched in 2013 to raise £30,000 to save the lighthouse's fading stripes. Following a successful repainting effort and a new maintenance agreement with Trinity House, 100% of the proceeds from this year's entry fees will benefit local causes, including the Eastbourne RNLI and local hospices.
