Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) will officially transfer into UK public ownership on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
. The nationalisation will bring the country's largest rail network under state control, ending over a decade of private operation by the Go-Ahead Group and Keolis joint venture.
Affected Brands
The transition includes all four passenger brands operated by the GTR franchise:
- Thameslink
- Southern
- Great Northern
- Gatwick Express
The Transition Process
- Interim Operator: Ahead of the complete launch of Great British Railways (GBR), the services will be managed by a subsidiary of DfT Operator Limited (DFTO).
- Contract Expiry: The government is executing the takeover following the expiry of GTR’s minimum contract terms, avoiding early termination fees and additional costs to taxpayers.
- Impact on Journeys: Bringing GTR into public ownership means that more than half of all passenger rail journeys across Great Britain will be publicly controlled.
Wider Rail Reform Timeline
The nationalisation is part of the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024, which aims to bring all 14 contracted passenger train operators into public hands by the end of 2027.
