Have your say on CCTV in Wealden taxis

A consultation is underway as to whether CCTV should be compulsory in all taxis licensed by Wealden District Council.

The council as a Licensing Authority is consulting on whether CCTV within both Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles would have a positive or adverse effect on the safety of passengers and users including children and vulnerable adults. 

The council needs to consider the safety of those who use taxis but also take account of the effect on their privacy while using the vehicle.

The government’s view is that CCTV can provide a safer environment for the benefit of taxi and private hire passengers and drivers by deterring and preventing the occurrence of crime; reduce the fear of crime; assist the police in investigating incidents of crime; and assist insurance companies in investigating motor vehicle accidents.

Before any decision is made, the council is running a six week consultation for the public to give their views and also talking to drivers, vehicle proprietors and operators.

Councillor Pam Doodes, Wealden District Council’s portfolio holder for Public Health, said, “There is an important discussion to be had here over CCTV being mandatory in taxis and private hire vehicles within Wealden and we need to know what the trade feels and indeed those who use licensed vehicles within the community. I would urge everyone to have their say during this period of consultation so the council can make an informed decision.”

The consultation is now open and runs until 20 January.
