Olympian Matt Weston granted Freedom Of Crowborough

Matt Weston was granted the Freedom of Crowborough on Friday, 1 May 2026, in recognition of his historic success at the 2026 Winter Olympics

The skeleton athlete became the first British Winter Olympian to win two gold medals at the same games, securing victories in both the men’s solo and the mixed team event alongside partner Tabitha Stoecker.

Ceremony Details

  • Location: The presentation took place at the Goldsmiths Recreation Ground in Crowborough, East Sussex.
  • Event Highlights: The public ceremony included speeches and a formal presentation by the Mayor of Crowborough and the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex.

Community Involvement: Local schools and organisations, including the 1st Crowborough Scout Group, were invited to the outdoor event to give Weston a "hero's welcome". 

Honours and Career Achievements

The Freedom of the Town is the highest civic accolade Crowborough Town Council can bestow. Weston’s recent accolades and career milestones include: 

  • 2026 Winter Olympics: Double Gold Medallist (Men’s Skeleton and Mixed Team).
  • World Cup Success: Three-time overall World Cup champion (2024, 2025, 2026).
  • World Championships: Two-time World Champion (2023, 2025), making him the first British man to achieve this feat.
  • European Titles: Two-time European Champion (2023, 2026). 

Weston described the homecoming as "amazing," expressing hope that his journey from local taekwondo and rugby clubs to Olympic gold would inspire local youth to follow their dreams.
