Sussex Police have issued a warning to residents in Wealden following a recent series of break-ins to rural outbuildings and reports of quad bike thefts.
As of May 1, 2026, officers are urging landowners and residents to review their security measures after a high frequency of reports, including numerous uninvited daytime callers on farms.
Crime Details
- Target Areas: Rural locations across the Wealden and Rother districts.
- Items Targeted: Primarily high-value power tools, farming equipment, and quad bikes, which remain a key target for rural criminals.
- Method: Attempted break-ins have occurred overnight and into the early hours, alongside suspicious vehicle activity and daylight visitors at farm properties.
Police Security Recommendations
Sussex Police and local crime prevention groups recommend several steps to protect rural property:
- Secure Storage: Keep all equipment and machinery in locked, secure buildings or containers.
- Physical Barriers: Use strong padlocks, reinforced doors, and layered security such as heavy-duty chains, ground anchors, and wheel clamps.
- Lighting and Alarms: Install visible, motion-activated security lighting and alarms on sheds or garages.
- Inventory Management: Mark and register tools (using UV pens or SmartWater) and maintain an up-to-date inventory with serial numbers and photos.
- Quad Bike Precautions: Store quad bikes in locked buildings whenever possible, remove keys, and consider installing immobilisers or tracking devices.
Reporting and Assistance
If you see suspicious activity or uninvited callers, you can report it to Sussex Police online or by calling 101. Obtain vehicle details and descriptions of individuals whenever safe to do so. Always dial 999 if a crime is currently in progress.
