From enthusiasts to those simply curious to learn more, Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare’s brand-new event, ‘All About Tortoises and Terrapins Day’ on Saturday 6 June will provide an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
This exciting new event shines a spotlight on tortoises and terrapins (collectively known as Chelonia), offering visitors a rare opportunity to learn more about these incredible animals and how to care for them responsibly.
Designed for both experienced tortoise and terrapin owners and those keen to learn more, the event will feature a full programme of engaging and educational activities.
What’s happening on the day
- Ask the Expert – Raystede’s animal care team and other experts will be on hand to discuss Chelonia care, diet, health, enrichment and housing.
- Expert talks for tortoise or terrapin owners
- Helpful resources – practical guides and handouts will be available to take home
- Meet the Turtle Tally team - learn about this citizen science project and discover how everyone can play their part in turtle research and conservation.
- Visit Raystede’s terrapin sanctuary – view some of the terrapins in Raystede’s care and learn more about them in the education ‘shell-ter’.
- Family trail and activities – explore a family friendly trail following Sheldon the tortoise on his journey through the seasons
Gemma Price, Head of Prevention and Education at Raystede said: “We are very excited to be holding our very first day dedicated to tortoises and terrapins. Our research estimates there are around 19,000 Chelonia living in Sussex, yet some owners struggle to provide the correct diet, UV lighting, heating and housing needed for them to live healthy lives.
“We hope that this educational day will provide an opportunity to understand these creatures better and how even small changes in owner knowledge and animal husbandry could transform the quality of life for these often-misunderstood creatures.”
Entry to the event is free, though booking is essential, and donations are encouraged to support Raystede’s vital work rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need.
