Brighton man in Lewes prison could be left disfigured

Antonio Alvarez Mas, a 42-year-old man from Brighton, may be permanently disfigured after allegedly receiving "shocking" medical treatment while held on remand at HMP Lewes.

Details of the Incident:-

  • The Medical Issue: In January 2026, Mr Alvarez Mas developed severe ear pain that progressed to leaking fluid, pus, and blood.
  • Alleged Negligence: His friend, Justin Bennett, claims Mr Alvarez Mas repeatedly sought help starting on 21st January, but was largely ignored for days. Despite his face dropping and signs of a potential stroke on 27 January, he reportedly did not receive immediate emergency care or antibiotics until 28 January.
  • Outcome: Following emergency surgery at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, surgeons discovered a "massive infection". The delay in treatment reportedly led to Bell’s palsy, a condition causing facial paralysis that doctors warned could be permanent.
  • Current Status: Mr Alvarez Mas remains at HMP Lewes on remand awaiting a trial scheduled for May 2026.

Responses from Authorities:-

The Ministry of Justice and the healthcare provider have denied the allegations of neglect:

  • Practice Plus Group: The private company contracted by NHS England to provide care at HMP Lewes stated they take patient health "extremely seriously" and provide high-quality services with daily appointments.
  • Prison Service: A spokesperson confirmed that healthcare is the responsibility of NHS England but maintained that staff acted in accordance with clinical advice provided by the prison's healthcare centre.
