Health and care partners mark Black History Month with new anti racism statement

Health and care organisations across Sussex are marking Black History Month with a public show of support for our communities and our workforce.

All partner organisations in Sussex Health and Care Integrated Care System have signed up to a new Anti Racism statement to mark the nationwide event.

The statement recognises the contribution and value of all members of the health and care workforce across Sussex, and makes a clear commitment to supporting them and standing against racism in all its forms.

Black History Month launched on 01 October with a theme of ‘Time for Change’.

All health and care partners have signed up to the statement and are sharing it widely across their organisations and in their communities.

The Sussex Health and Care Anti-racism statement:

“There is no place for racism in Sussex. We recognise the impact that racist behaviours have on our workforce are devastating. It is our responsibility to create safe, inclusive and supporting work environments and stamp racism when we see it. We stand firmly together with our partners in being committed to tackling institutional and interpersonal racism in all of its forms. We commit to listening, monitoring and continually evaluating our practice because we recognise that good anti racist practice for our workforce leads to better care for our patients and our population.”

All partners recognise that the statement is just the start of their collective commitment to supporting their staff and their communities.

Work across health and care organisations in Sussex is underway to develop a wider approach to equalities, diversity and inclusion.

To mark Black History Month, health and care partners will also be delivering a series of planned events and training for its staff, as well as the opportunity for staff, family and friends to learn more about Sussex’s local black history on a dedicated bus tour led by Bert Williams MBE, President and co-founder of Brighton & Hove Black History Month.

As part of the events, we have launched a new NHS Sussex News podcast with Bert sharing more about the local historical contributions of ethnically diverse communities across Sussex. Visit https://www.sussex.ics.nhs.uk/news/ for all episodes of our NHS Sussex News podcasts.
