Major honour for Sussex man who runs famous bluebell walk

John McCutchan, the 89-year-old owner of Bates Green Farm in Arlington, East Sussex, has been honoured as a winner of the 2026 Times Sternberg Active Life Awards.

This prestigious accolade celebrates the outstanding contributions of individuals to their community and public life made after their 70th birthday. McCutchan, who was already an MBE for his charitable services, is scheduled to attend a reception at 11 Downing Street on 23 April 2026 to receive the award. He was nominated by his late helper, Stuart Higgins, who sadly passed away just weeks before the announcement.

The Arlington Bluebell Walk & Farm Trail

The award recognises McCutchan's lifelong dedication to fundraising through the Arlington Bluebell Walk, an event he has run for 53 years in memory of his late wife, Carolyn.

Fundraising Milestone: The walk has raised over £1.1 million for more than 80 local charities since it began as a one-off school fundraiser in 1972.

Charity Support: Each year, approximately 25–28 different charities help manage the walk's catering and car parking, receiving the proceeds from their designated days.

Legacy and Future: A charitable trust is currently being established to safeguard the long-term future of both the Bluebell Walk and the

Bates Green Garden, which is a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Partner Garden.
