A Sussex Police officer has been reprimanded following an accelerated gross misconduct hearing.
Police Constable Matthew Crane was alleged to have inappropriately touched a member of his team while in the role of Sergeant in Eastbourne custody between 16 and 19 September, 2023, while on duty.
The matter was referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct who directed that a local investigation by the Professional Standards Department should be conducted.
He was charged with two counts of sexual assault and, following a criminal trial concluding on 9 September, 2025, was found not guilty of one count, while the other resulted in a hung jury.
In February, PC Crane was subject to gross misconduct proceedings following the conclusion of the criminal trial, focused on breaches of professional standards namely discreditable conduct and authority, respect and courtesy.
He admitted his actions were inappropriate, but denied they amounted to gross misconduct.
Following a two-day hearing, gross misconduct was proven and PC Crane was reduced in rank from Police Sergeant to Police Constable.
