A man from Hastings, Sussex, was handed a 10-year ban on owning dogs after a prosecution by the RSPCA for mistreating his dog, Rocco.
Case Details:-
- The Victim: Rocco, a dog adopted from a rescue centre.
- Evidence: Video footage provided to the RSPCA showed Rocco cowering and displaying extreme fear due to the owner's "extreme aversive behaviour".
- Investigation: RSPCA Inspector Andrew Kirby and Hastings Police attended the premises on 12 November (previous year) to take Rocco into care.
Sentencing:- The defendant was sentenced at Hastings Magistrates’ Court with the following penalties:
- 10-Year Ownership Ban: He is disqualified from owning dogs for a decade and cannot appeal the ban for at least five years.
- 18-Month Conditional Discharge: Handed alongside the ban.
- Financial Penalties: Ordered to pay £500 in costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
Mitigation:-
The court heard that the man felt "overwhelmed" by attempts to muzzle and harness Rocco. He also cited personal health concerns affecting his mobility and fitness as contributing factors to his inability to care for the dog properly.
