The Sussex family that has supported the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) for over a century is the Guy family from Eastbourne

Four generations of the family have collectively contributed 112 years of lifesaving service at the Eastbourne RNLI Lifeboat Station

The Generational Legacy

  • Great-Grandfather (George): Started the family tradition by becoming the first to volunteer at the Eastbourne station. [1, 2]
  • Grandfather (Dick): Completed 47 years of volunteering before his retirement, witnessing the evolution of rescue gear from maroons and landlines to modern pagers. 
  • Uncle (Tim): Contributed 20 years of dedicated service. 
  • Father (Dan): Marking his 30th year of service. He also serves full-time as an RNLI Fleet Staff Coxswain and was awarded the prestigious Bronze Medal for Gallantry for a dramatic sea rescue in 2002. 
  • Daughter (Ellie): The newest recruit, who joined the Eastbourne crew at 18 years old, keeping the family's active volunteering streak alive.
